    It's official, Clamp chose Japan Expo for their very first visit in France, and Europe as a whole ^^

    There are some infos about Clamp I will be translating for you from French, I found them interesting:

    En 2006, CLAMP a dépassé le seuil des 90 millions de Manga vendus ! Et ce succès est international : à commencer par les Etats-Unis, la France, la Chine, Taiwan et la Corée du sud, leurs œuvres sont aujourd’hui publiées dans 18 pays au total !! CLAMP est ainsi devenu 10ème du classement de l’UNESCO « des auteurs japonais les plus traduits (romans inclus) ».

    En incluant les pays étrangers (environ 17 millions d’ouvrages), le chiffre total des ventes dépasse facilement les cent millions (82,1% au Japon ; 17,9% à l’étranger).

    My translation:

    In 2006, Clamp surpassed the threshold of 90 millions mangas sold! And this success is international: starting with the US, France, China, Taiwan and South Corea, their work are published today in 18 different countries! Clamp became that way the 10th "japanese author most translated (novels included)" in the UNESCO ranking.

    Including foreign countries (around 17 millions of books/works), the total number of selling surpass easily the 100 millions (82,1% in Japan and 17,9% in the rest of the world).

    Clamp indeed got placed 10th in the ranking, I thought the sentence really couldn't be any clearer ^^;;

    One of the many activities of the UNESCO is cooperating with others countries all over the world to secure the world cultural and natural heritage and it also got many communication and information programs.
    The classification of the world heritages in all kind of domains is one of their 'hobbies' ;)

    It's a fact that CLAMP is famous around the world. Here in Brazil, for example, we don't have all CLAMP mangas published yet (RGVeda is one of them). But it's good to see that CLAMP will be guests of honor, it is totally deserved!

    The first activity of CLAMP at the Japan Expo has been announced today by the event's official website: to judge a Cosplay Contest!

    There will a special Cosplay Contest of CLAMP characters and the winners will be chosen by CLAMP themselves!

    Kei_san77 was kind enough to rip the video interview in high quality! There's a total of two videos. The first one is very short and it shows CLAMP working in their studio, the second video is the interview itself.

    Hello CLAMP. Could you introduce yourselves ? What is the job of each of you?

    O: Ohkawa Ageha from CLAMP, I am in charge of the scenarios and the script.
    M: Mokona from CLAMP, I supervise the drawings.
    I : Igarashi Satsuki from CLAMP, I take care of the sketches, the design of the books and the essays.
    N: Nekoi Tsubaki from CLAMP, I handle the illustrations among other things.

    Could you tell us how you met and how you decided to work together?

    O: These three were in the same high school. They got on well with one of my friends who brought us together.

    Why did you choose to name yourselves CLAMP?

    O: It was not us who chose to name ourselves CLAMP, it was a friend who prompted it. He was often together with us in activity clubs or when we were doing doujinshi. I don’t think that this name is such important.

    What is the meaning of CLAMP?

    O: What is it already?
    I(?): A mountain of potatoes?
    O: He told us that, but in the dictionary…
    I: The literal meaning is “stud”. A mountain of potatoes is the figurative sense.
    O: But you can’t find the definition in every dictionary.

    The very attractive drawing style of your manga can sometimes hide a dark, venomous story. How do explain that?

    O: Good question! When we develop a scenario, we never know beforehand if the story will be serious or somber.

    How did the idea of doing a cross-over between Tsubasa and Holic came to you mind?

    O: We wanted to create two stories with the same characters so that the two series would converge. The initial idea was to imagine cross-overs between the actions. We then imagined two plots in different worlds. It was like writing two parallel story lines.

    In Clover, like often in your stories, you often go back to the theme of imprisonment. Is it a theme that you feel strongly about or is it just a scenaristic trick?

    O: It’s true that an escape is always easy to develop, and as our characters are rather individualistic and want to escape from a group or constraints, it might be one of our favorite themes. But it’s true it is quite rare among Japanese writers.

    CLAMP’s creativity and productivity is impressive, you manage to run several series at the same time. What is you secret?

    O : We sacrifice our private life!
    M: It is true. We never go on vacation.
    O: if you give up on your private life, you can do the same.

    How do you reconcile your private life and your professional life?

    O: I think that if you tried to live like us, you wouldn’t succeed in doing that. Since our debuts, we have never taken a week of vacation. A day off per month, and we’re happy enough; when everything goes well, we manage to take two days off. If you can keep up this pace for 18 years, you will succeed in publishing as many books as we do.

    M: I have heard that in some countries, people have three months of vacation.
    O: What a dream!

    Could you tell us what are your sources of inspiration to create your manga?

    O: The deadline! As soon as we know when it is, we do our best to create a story. It is like the deadline of some homework or some essay.

    M: We always do it in a rush.

    O : We should be better organized. But when we begin a project, it is always hard for us to forget about our previous work. In fact, we rarely find our inspiration in our daily life.

    M : When I have an idea for a character’s design, I sometimes do a quick sketch. Or, but that is rare, when I come across someone with an interesting hair cut, I take notes.

    O : It happens concerning the designs but as for the scenarios… it can happen but is even more exceptional. For example, in the case of Clover, I was inspired by one my dreams. I transcribed it almost entirely while adding a few alterations.

    M: I think that was also the case of RG VEDA, in the beginning.

    My comment: I suppose that's the legitimate reason why all of their plot twist are just so WTF and "that doesn't make any sense" XD since they are all trying to just meet the "deadline" all the time.

    And seriously o__O they REALLY are workaholic... seriously, there's also another reason HOW they have such "torturing fans and their characters" idea ;____; because they quite torture themselves with the workload too x____x Seriously, even if it is something I "enjoy" to do... but not taking any vacations and working quite non-stop and don't really have much of a "private life" for 18 straight years ... I probably have gone insane already.

    So yes... what we always thought (knew) is true, they start thinking the deadlines. It sure results in all of those crazy plot twist we know!! Surprised

    About the workaholic thing, they are monsters!! They just throw away their lives! It's interesting how they know about their position and say clearly that they are great! Just like "throw away your life, work everyday about 18 years and you'll be awesome just like we are!" ahahah laugh


    The only thing I didn't like is the fact that they don't give a damn about the name CLAMP. I know it was a friend who created it but they almost don't remember the meaning and say that this is not important... awkward!

    Sorry if I'm ranting, but I am so agree with you, YamiSakura and Seshirou. I don't get why they always try to meet the deadline? is it because they like the pressure when they're in rush? O__o No wonder they've been throwing so many crazy plot twist ew
    And why on Earth they have wasted their 18 years of living by working without a single break? true, I would be insane if I was in their shoes XD

    Japan Expo staff has made it possible for anyone to send their questions to CLAMP to be answered in their public conference at the event (similar to what was done for Anime Expo in 2006).

    The event's official website has more information (http://www.japan-expo.com/nws-370-en-clamp_answers_your_questions!.html) on how to submit your question (basically you must fill a form).

    The deadline is May 15.

    They have also announced the day of CLAMP's first public conference: Saturday, July 4.

    LOL at their first question example: When the X series will be finished? I so wanna hear them answering that question for the thousandth time (and it's the thousandth time and is even bolder, Teddy Picker, love this song xD).
